Tux Wraith

Privacy policy

Last updated: October 2, 2026

Tux Wraith is a Linux publication, and it is built to collect as little personal data as possible. There are no reader accounts, no sign-up forms, and no standalone third-party analytics service. This page explains the small amount of data that is used and why.

What we collect

Anonymous article view counts

When you open an article, the site records an anonymous view so we can see which guides are useful. To avoid counting the same reader repeatedly, a one-way hash is computed from your IP address and browser user agent combined with a private secret value (a salt). Only that hash is stored. Your IP address and user agent are not stored in readable form, and the hash cannot be turned back into either of them. A given visitor is counted at most once per article every 24 hours. Automated crawlers and link-preview bots are not counted.

Helpful button

The “Helpful” button on articles lets you mark a guide as useful. To remember your choice and prevent duplicate votes, the site creates a random identifier that is not derived from your name, IP address, or device, and stores it in two places in your browser:

  • a cookie named tuxwraith_voter_id, kept for one year, used only for the Helpful button; and
  • a browser localStorage entry named tuxwraith:voter-id, a backup copy of the same identifier.

Your vote is stored together with this random identifier and the article. To limit abuse, requests to the Helpful feature are rate-limited using a short-lived, salted hash of your IP address that is kept only in server memory for about a minute.

Theme preference

If you switch between light and dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser's localStorage under the key theme. It never leaves your device.

Server logs

Like most websites, the infrastructure that serves this site may keep standard technical logs (for example IP address, requested page, and timestamp) for security and reliability. We do not use these logs for advertising or profiling.

Advertising and third-party tracking

This site may use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its third-party advertising vendors may use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other websites. These cookies may be used to show personalized ads based on your interests, depending on your settings and applicable consent requirements.

You can manage or opt out of personalized advertising through Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info. Learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use its services.

Some articles may embed external content such as videos (YouTube, via its privacy-enhanced domain), code demos (CodePen), posts (X), or snippets (GitHub Gist). When an article includes one of these embeds, that provider may receive your IP address and may set its own cookies. Their handling of data is governed by their own privacy policies.

Cookies and browser storage

  • tuxwraith_voter_id (cookie, 1 year): anonymous identifier for the Helpful button.
  • tuxwraith:voter-id (localStorage): backup copy of the same identifier.
  • theme (localStorage): your light or dark theme preference.
  • Advertising cookies: Google and participating vendors may set cookies when advertising is enabled, subject to your choices and applicable consent requirements.
  • Session cookies: set only when a site administrator or editor signs in to the publishing area. Regular readers never receive them.

Your choices and rights

You can delete the cookie and the localStorage entries at any time in your browser settings, or block them entirely. The site continues to work; the Helpful button will simply treat you as a new visitor. You can also use your browser's “Do Not Track” or content-blocking features without losing access to any article.

Because view counts are stored only as irreversible hashes, they cannot be linked back to you. If you would like a Helpful vote removed, send us the value of your tuxwraith_voter_id cookie. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to ask what data is held about you, to request correction or deletion, or to object to processing. We will respond to reasonable requests as quickly as we can.

Changes to this policy

If we change how data is handled, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date above.
